Review:
John Travolta, once again, plays Chili Palmer
in this sequel to the 1995 movie, Get Shorty.
Although the first film is more fun and better
acted, I still enjoyed the sequel because
Travolta is the essence of cool. Being done
with the movie business, he decides to break
into the music business and finds a young
singer, Christina Milian, who he believes
he can make a star. She is contracted to someone
else for five years but that doesn't stop
Chili. Vince Vaughn, who manages Milian is
Jewish and wants to be African American. The
Rock is his gay bodyguard but he wants to
be a singer. Cedric the Entertainer is a Wharton
graduate who manages a group of thugs called
"Dub MD" (Weapons of Mass Destruction).
He is the perfect father at home but a gangster
type in his business. Before I forget, the
Russian mob is also involved in the movie.
They kill Chili's friend, who owns a record
label, for owing them money. Chili sees them
so now they want to kill him. Uma Thurman
(Edie) is the widow of the man that gets killed
and she owns half the record label. Edie and
Chili team up to produce their new singer's
first CD and to get her contract so they can
produce her. It is a little complicated. There
are several violent scenes with shooting,
guns and fighting. People do get killed. We
see pole dancers in skimpy costumes two different
times. There are sexual references and sensuality.
There is also language, including use of the
F word once. The characters drink and smoke.
There are no good role models in the movie
but adults can enjoy it for what it is, entertaining.
This is not a movie for young teen-agers.
If they can drive themselves to the movie,
then they are old enough to see it. What will
Cedric's daughter think of him when she learns
what he does for a living? Do any of these
characters seem real to you?

Linda
Thomas is a native Minnesotan. She
graduated from the University of
Minnesota with a double major in
sociology and psychology. Married
with a family, she has remained
in the Minneapolis area.
Linda has been a lover of movies
since she was a small child. This
love of film eventually brought
her to the point in life where
she is now, a film critic. She
was featured on WCCO radio for
three years on the Dark
in the Morning show with
Dark Star.
In December of 2001, Linda became
the film critic for the syndicated
Ruth Koscielak Show.
Linda sees over 150 movies a
year and has had the opportunity
to interview a number of directors
and actors when they are in town.
She has also appeared on a public
access show called the "Cinema
Judge" and has ventured into
writing for "Cinestar"
magazine in September 2002. The
Twin Cities movie magazine is
available, for free, at most local
Blockbuster's and local movie
cheaters.
Her website is: www.lindathomasmovies.com
As one of the few female reviewers
in the Twin Cities area, she brings
a unique point of view to her
reviews. Linda has raised two
children, a boy and a girl, and
knows what they like in movies
and what is appropriate. Hopefully,
her reviews will help your family
in choosing where to next spend
your movie-going dollar.
